This Privacy Policy explains how Transcam ("we", "our", or "the app") handles information when you use our mobile application. Transcam is a translator: it translates text, speech, two-way conversations and the text in photographs, across 152 languages.
The short version. Transcam has two translation engines, and which one runs decides whether anything leaves your phone at all. When the language pair is downloaded, translation happens entirely on your device and nothing is transmitted. Otherwise the text you asked to translate is sent to our server, translated, and returned — we do not store it. We never ask for an account, a name, or a phone number.
Transcam can translate without a network connection, using the translation engine built into your operating system (Apple's Translation framework on iOS, Google's ML Kit on Android). When a language pack for the pair is installed on your phone:
You can see and manage these language packs under More → Offline packs, and turn on Translate offline on the home screen once both sides of your pair are downloaded.
When the pair is not downloaded, or when you ask for something the on-device engine cannot do — a tone, alternative wordings, pronunciation in Latin letters, or a dictionary entry — Transcam sends your request to our server, which passes it to a third-party language model and returns the result.
What is sent:
What is not sent: your name, your email, your contacts, your location, your device identifiers, or anything else from your phone.
We do not store what you translate. Our server holds the text only in memory for the seconds it takes to produce the translation. It is not written to disk, not written to a database, and not kept in a request log. The third-party model provider processes it to generate the translation under its own policy and does not use it to train models.
Voice translation and Conversation mode turn what you say into text using the speech recognition built into your operating system — Apple's on iOS, Google's on Android. That recognition is performed by your operating system, not by us, and depending on your device and language it may be processed on the device or by that provider's service under its own privacy policy. Transcam receives only the finished text, which is then translated as described in section 1.
Transcam does not record audio, does not save audio, and never uploads audio to our server. The microphone is used only while you are actively holding or tapping the record control.
There is one exception, and it is worth stating plainly. The on-device text recognisers cover a limited set of scripts. For a language written in a script your device cannot read — Thai, Hebrew, Arabic, Greek and others — Transcam sends the photograph to our server so the text can be extracted there. The image is used only to read the text out of it and is not stored afterwards. Photographs you open from your library are treated exactly the same way.
Transcam asks for camera access so it can read the text you point it at, and for photo library access so you can translate a picture you already have. Either permission can be granted or revoked at any time in your device settings.
Transcam includes an optional keyboard you can enable in your system settings, so you can translate inside any other app before sending a message.
On iOS the keyboard requires "Allow Full Access" purely so that it can reach the translation service over the network. On Android it is an input method you enable yourself. If you never enable the keyboard, none of this applies to you.
To understand how the app is used and to fix problems, we collect:
These events never contain what you translated. Where the length of your text is useful to us, we record the number of characters and nothing else; a dictionary lookup records how long the word was, not the word. No translated text, no recognised text from a photograph, and no image data appears in any analytics event.
If you email us for support, we receive your message, your email address, and whatever app and device details you choose to include.
We do not use your information to build advertising profiles, and we do not sell it.
Transcam Pro is sold as a subscription through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Payment is handled entirely by the store. We never receive or store your payment card details — only whether a subscription is currently active, so the app knows what to unlock. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period, and you can manage or cancel them in your App Store or Google Play account settings.
Transcam uses a small number of third-party services, each governed by its own privacy policy:
Everything Transcam sends travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Requests to our translation service are signed so that they cannot be tampered with in transit. For anything translated on your device, the question does not arise: it never travels at all.
Transcam is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us.
Translation requests and the diagnostic information described above may be processed in countries other than your own, including by the model providers listed in section 9. We ensure appropriate safeguards are in place in accordance with this Privacy Policy.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the new policy on this page and update the "Last Updated" date above.
